Annual transparency report from the Code of Conduct team regarding CppNorth 2024.
Conference Overview
CppNorth 2024 took place in July, starting with an evening reception July 21st and continuing through three full days: the 22nd to 24th. No complaints or reports were received by the code of conduct team over this time and the onsite event was pleasant and harmonious.
Post-Conference Activity
In December, after the conference talks were published on YouTube, the conduct committee received an email from someone offended by the word "native" in a talk title. It appears to have been intended as a pun on the concepts of "native code" (as many refer to C++) and of speaking a language or knowing an area "like a native". However the viewer saw a connection to Indigenous people and felt the title should not have been accepted for a talk.
Committee Response
On review, we decided to take a stronger line on talk titles in the future. Titles that try for humour can end up misleading or even upsetting those who see and hear them, and should be approached with great care. Starting with the 2025 program, a code of conduct team member reviews titles to be sure that none carry extra meanings that could upset a viewer or reader. The conduct team chose to take no other action for the specific talk, which will stay on the youtube channel in its original format, and communicated these decisions to the person who complained.
